I don’t spend much time in Maine in the winter, but when I am there it’s not uncommon to see snow outside the window
or ducks lazily floating by on thin ice that has formed along harbor’s edge.
From time to time, when very cold air meets warmer water temperatures, there is the magic of sea smoke.
All of this is quite normal for a midcoast Maine winter. What is not normal is what has happened the last couple of weeks when below zero temps and freezing winds caused Rockport Harbor to freeze.
Only a few lobster boats remain in the water this time of year, and they were locked in ice that had to be broken up by Coast Guard cutters.
As if that were not enough, along came this weekend’s blizzard which dropped 24″ of new snow in the Rockport/Camden area.
Blinding snow, furious winds and snow drifts blocking windows and doors combined to keep folks inside most of the weekend.
We would have been right there with them as this photo shows that leaving the house might be a bit of a challenge. Hmmm, I’m wondering how all this snow is going to clear. I guess it will just have to melt away when the weather warms.
One thing I’m betting is it won’t be this guy who lends a helping hand as it looks like his effort got the best of him!
Wherever you are this weekend, I hope you are safe and warm.
i so appreciate your visit and the comments you leave behind
